Never been a hugely skilled gardener but have a garden to look after, and always tried to make it look nice. After a few years of this it was bothering me that just pruning random bits off plants here and there didn't seem to get the results I wanted. Plants would get too big, I'd dig them up, and buy new ones. Not very sustainable. So I did some research and found this book. What a whole world I had not discovered; in a short time I understood where I had been going wrong and what I needed to do to get my garden looking nice. At the risk of stating the obvious for the seasoned gardener, knowing how to prune is a massive, huge part of having a successful, low-maintenance garden. I would say in hindsight probably the most significant area of garden upkeep. This book does a good job to explain not just how to prune different types of plants and when, but why and what effects it has on growth, shape, and plants' health. It's all pretty simple and straightforward if you follow what it says, and it's worked wonders in my garden. For me, this book strikes the perfect balance between describing the science of pruning, with examples for most common plants which will need to be pruned (and advice on those that do not) in reference format. So, with a few evenings' reading you are from then on equipt to pick up this book from time to time to find out exactly how and when to prune the plant you want to get the desired result. Top book.

Never really got to grips with pruning or training and have taken over an allotment with neglected and overgrown fruit trees and bushes. My attempts have had varying success rates and unwilling to cull trees on principal I decided that I needed expert advice, which the RHS can be trusted to provide in good, simple detail. The book has enabled me to review my tools, look at the trees and bushes in a more objective light and plan how to get the best results from the new specimens I had already purchased and plan to purchase. There need be no cull of established trees, just some carefully planned gradual renovation. The same principle applies to the garden I have inherited, and I look forward to better blooms and a better harvest.

Bought used but in pristine condition. Lots of photos and diagrams this offers a good overview of plant and tree care for the beginner and intermediate level gardener, it can't cover everything but the 300 pages includes most of what a UK/Ireland grower is likely to encounter.
